January 2004 Meeting

We had a great meeting and working session on January 10.

A 100 megabit Ethernet network was constructed with a connection via a router to the Internet and Carlos set up a server and demonstrated how to share a directory for clients. As a trial, the three Fedora discs and the three RedHat 9 discs were transferred to the server from a client. Transfers took about four minutes for each 660 Megabyte CD over the local Ethernet.

Celestia and other programs were downloaded from the Internet over the Museum's network connection and installed on members computers. The Museum's Internet connection averaged 600 MB download speed, truly amazing.

Port scanning tools were run on member computers to demonstrate security tools.

The server can now be used to upgrade members computers.

Many thanks to the Museum of Science and History for continuing to be our host.
